This was my first glimpse of the bond between Crown and people, an enduring link that had been reforged in the furnace of the Second World War, and which was strengthened during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. ![]() It was 6 February 1952, and the Queen’s father, George VI, had just died in his sleep.įor at least a month thereafter, my mother, like many millions of others, wore a black armband in mourning. When I asked why, she replied: ‘Because the King is dead.’ I was five years old, but somehow I knew that this was an important moment. ![]() My strongest early memory is of my mother weeping in our garden. ![]()
